Algeria: Cartoonist sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison for “insulting the president”

THE Algerian cartoonist Gilles Ainous, who lives in France, was today sentenced in absentia by an Algerian court to ten years in prison for “insulting the president of the Republic” through his cartoons, as reported by the National Committee for the Liberation of Prisoners (CNLD).

“It’s official, the criminal court in Bejaia has convicted him cartoonist Gilas Ainous in prison for 10 years and an international arrest warrant was issued against him for his sketcheshe said on Twitter.

According to the CNLD, the charges Ainous faced were “apology for terrorist acts, insult to the President of the Republic and insult to an institution”.

The 34-year-old, a former contributor to the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, has been based in France for many years. He is close to Algeria’s pro-democracy Hirak movement and publishes his cartoons on his personal blog or online opposition news media, and is known for not siding with any political authority, including President Abdelmadjid Teboun.
