Algeria suspends cooperation agreement with Spain due to Western Sahara

Algeria today suspended a “treaty of friendship, good neighborliness and co-operation” with Spain in 2002, following Madrid’s turn to support Morocco’s plan for Western Sahara autonomy, the Algerian presidency announced today.

Considering that the new position of the Spanish authorities constituted a “breach of their legal, moral and political obligations”, Algeria “decided to proceed immediately with the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation concluded on 8 October 2002 with the Kingdom of Spain and “which framed the development of relations between the two countries,” said the presidency of the Republic.

The Spanish-Algerian treaty provided for the strengthening of the political dialogue between the two countries at all levels and the development of cooperation in the economic, financial, educational and defense fields.

On March 18, Spain radically changed its position, supporting for the first time Morocco’s position on an autonomy plan for Western Sahara, while always advocating neutrality between Rabat and the Sahrawi separatists of the Polisario Front.

“These same (Spanish) authorities, who are responsible for an unjustified reversal of their position from the announcements of March 18, 2022, in which the current Spanish government fully supported the illegal formation of internal autonomy supported by the occupying power, are working to promote a “colonial event using false arguments,” the presidency added.

“This attitude of the Spanish Government violates the international legitimacy imposed on it by its status as a managing power and the efforts of the United Nations and the new Secretary-General’s envoy and directly contributes to the deteriorating situation in Western Sahara and the region.”
