AlgeriA: While Looking For Water, A Farmer Would Have Come Across … Oil

can be described as a small miracle. The find of an Algerian from Constantine meets a strong echo in his country, underlines International mail. The man, who was drilling the basement of his farm for water, saw a very different liquid emerge from the ground, viscous and blackish, strongly resembling petroleum. A discovery made at a depth of 90 meters and which surprises, even though it is not the region where the country’s reserves are located.

The scene took place a few days ago in the commune of Ouled Rahmoune, under the wilaya of Constantine, in the east of the country. Moslem Boubaker, a small local farmer, wanted to irrigate his fields in times of drought, tells the site Tout sur l’Algerie (TSA). After this surprising find during his drilling, the man contacted the authorities and requested that samples be taken and analyzed. On social media, the ad initially generated disbelief. The known reserves of Algeria are rather located in the Sahara, in the south of the country. Some felt that he was going to become a “billionaire” when others considered that the well would become state property.

A high level of hydrocarbons

What is the result of the analyzes? According to Arezki Bouterik, the director of the environment of the wilaya of Constantine, the first results reveal “A significant rate of hydrocarbons in the liquid at the rate of 460 milligrams per liter and 620 milligrams of oil per liter, in addition to fats and substances in suspension with a rate of 1,200 mg / liter”. High figures but which are not enough however to prove with certainty that it is indeed oil, specifies for its part the daily newspaper El Watan.

The state-owned oil and gas company, Sonatrach, had announced exploration work for oil and gas in the north of the country, but without communicating the results, underlines TSA. Company experts visited the site to further research. Their samples will also be analyzed.
