Algorithm will ‘read’ pigs’ language and translate it to farmers

Scientists in Europe have created a special algorithm capable of interpreting the “language” of pigs and translating it to farmers so they can improve the welfare of their animals. The algorithm could alert pig farmers to their pigs’ negative emotions so they can take care of their psychosomatic state, explained Elodie Mandel-Briefer, a behavioral biologist at the University of Copenhagen and one of the authors of the study. Scientists from universities in Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France, Norway and the Czech Republic used thousands of recorded sounds of pigs in various situations – such as at play, when they were competing for food or when they were isolated – to find out whether grunts, squeaks and squeals reveal positive or negative emotions.
