Alibaba promoted its new model, QWQ-32B, in an online statement as “exceptional performance, almost entirely surpassing the OpenAI-O1-Mini and rivaling the stronger open source reasoning model, DeepSeek-R1.”
OpenAi-O1-Mini is the economic reasoning model of the American company launched last year.
Alibaba added in a statement that the model reached a “qualitative jump in mathematics, coding and general capabilities, with general performance equivalent to DeepSeek R1”.
The group said its model has 32 billion parameters compared to DeepSek R1, which has 671 billion. Less variables indicate that a model is smaller and more efficient to train.
Deepseek surprised the world in January with its R1 high performance reasoning model, which said it costs much less to train than established western rivals.
His success has increased the confidence between global investors in the ability of innovation of Chinese companies at a time when the US-China technological rivalry intensifies. The Hang Seng China Enterprises rate has risen more than 30% since January.
Alibaba, owner of Chinese e -commerce platforms Taobao and Tmall, first launched its service equivalent to chatgPT, the Tongyi Qianwen in 2023 after OpenAi launched its AI reasoning model that defined the industry.
In January, the group launched another model, the Qwen 2.5 Max, which said it had surpassed the performance of DeepSeek’s acclaimed V3 model, released just a few weeks earlier.
Thursday’s news led Alibaba shares listed in Hong Kong to close 8% higher and helped boost Hang Seng’s China Enterprises.
Last week, Alibaba promised to invest at least 380 billion yuans ($ 52.4 billion) in its AI infrastructure and cloud computing over the next three years. He said the value exceeded what had invested in these areas in the last decade.
