Alice Weidel and Tino Hroupala re-elected to the leadership of the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD)

Alice Weidel and Tino Hroupala were today re-elected to the leadership of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) by the party’s congress, which is taking place in Essen. Unopposed, Ms. Weidel secured 79.9% of the vote, while Mr. Hrupala secured 82.7%. The two co-chairs renewed their terms for the next two years. A little further afield, some 45,000 people demonstrated against the conference being held in their city. Speaking to the 600 delegates, Alice Weidel criticized the federal government, accusing it of deindustrializing the country, which she said had “become a pony farm”. Referring to immigration, she stressed that, if the AfD were in power, it would repeal the citizenship law that just came into force, as well as the gender and name self-determination law.
