Aliens, artists or prank? Another ‘mysterious’ monolith appears in the US

Another “mysterious” monolith was seen. This time, in the middle of a trail in Las Vegas, in the United States, according to information from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

“We see a lot of strange things when we go hiking, like not being prepared for the weather, not bringing enough water, but look at this!” the department wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday (18) showing images of a mirrored structure. “How did it get up there?”

The monolith was found over the weekend near Gass Peak, north of Las Vegas, he added.

LVMPD did not immediately respond to the company’s request for a note. CNN .

The pillar resembles the 3-meter silver monolith discovered in late 2020 by a helicopter flying over the Utah desert. Similar structures have appeared on a mountaintop in California, a forest in Romania and on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England.

The number of monoliths has dwindled since 2021, but in March, local builder Craig Muir in Powys County, Wales, stumbled upon one while hiking up a hill. He told the BBC it appeared to be carefully planted.

“There were no obvious clues around him and one would think something like this would cause a lot of mess,” he said.

As for the one found on the Las Vegas hiking trail, social media users claimed that the monolith is not actually new.

“Anyone who lives there sees this weekly,” said one comment on the LVMPD Facebook post.

“Yes! I’ve been seeing this for years,” wrote another in a response, amid posts joking about aliens, pranks and that it could be a portal to other dimensions.

“Obelisks have unknown power and purpose. I guess it’s man-made, but aliens are still among us. Keep your eyes open and cameras ready,” one user wrote.

Others assumed it was a work of art, something that has been speculated about previous monoliths.

Gallerist David Zwirner in 2020 argued that the monolith in Utah was the work of the late minimalist sculptor John McCracken, and that it was somehow installed after his death in 2011.

He later backtracked and said, “When you look closely at the photos, you will see rivets and screws that are not consistent with how John wanted his work to be constructed. He was a perfectionist.”

Meanwhile, designer Tom Dunford told the BBC in December 2020 that he erected the monolith on the Isle of Wight, “purely for fun.”

“When I saw the first one appear (in Utah) I thought it was brilliant, the second one appeared and I had a text from a friend who said ‘you’re the man who can do this on the island’,” he told the BBC.

“I am absolutely fascinated by futuristic design, science and space. The real idea sparked when I was walking back to the office and we had an old sheet of mirrored Perspex,” said Dunford.

In Nevada, Las Vegas police took the opportunity to remind trail adventurers to be safe.

The LVMPD said it would leave internet detectives to “work on this mystery.”
