The main foods used in the June celebrations had a price increase above the inflation accumulated in the last twelve months. This is what the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) survey shows, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), produced by the Foundation itself.
According to the indicator, the average price of June ingredients rose 13.12%, while consumer inflation, according to the Monthly CPI, was 10.08%.
According to FGV, typical festival dishes such as green broth will cost more this year. Potatoes, for example, rose by 71.35% in the last twelve months, and are the highest among these foods.
The cabbage registered an increase of 29.34%. Another item highlighted by FGV is the candy apple, as products such as refined sugar, apples and crystal sugar rose 42.02%, 28.68% and 26.8%, respectively.
For the economist at FGV and coordinator of the IPC, Matheus Peçanha, the main reason for the exponential increase in the prices of these foods, mainly for vegetables, is the climatic complications of recent months, such as the water crisis last year and excessive rainfall in beginning of this year.
“In this last shock, torrential rains in the summer months impacted almost all horticultural crops, so we saw an absurd price escalation in the last 4 or 5 months of items as basic as tomatoes and carrots, which were the protagonists of this period. , but also important items on this list such as potatoes, cabbage and apples”, points out Matheus Peçanha.
Other products surveyed by the Foundation, which are commonly used in June and had a price increase above inflation, were popcorn (20.95%), long-life milk (18.03%), wheat flour (16.78 %), cassava/manioc (16.03%), cornmeal (15.63%), eggs (15.1%), sweet potato (13.83%), canned corn (12.08%), Minas cheese (11.23%), condensed milk (10.67%) and sausage (10.1%).
“Many of these products have no substitute for those who want to follow the traditional recipe, so the main tip to circumvent the impact on the pocket is to research prices, give preference to lesser-known brands or gather a larger group and buy at ‘atacarejos’, to get discounts bigger”, adds Peçanha.
