All crowded in a disco in Amsterdam: it is an experiment on Covid

It looks like a party, but it’s an experiment. In Amsterdam 1300 people were invited to a nightclub, the Ziggo Dome, to test which are the anti Covid rules and behaviors to keep in order to understand how the premises can reopen. 100,000 had booked and the tickets, sold for 15 euros, were all sold in 20 minutes.

The people involved remained in line for four hours. They have been placed sensors on their bodies to understand distances and movements. They had cocktails fluorescent to understand how droplets can be transmitted.

They have all been tested on entry and will be tested again after five days.

Participants in the experiment were divided into six separate groups. Each group had different rules about spacing, range of motion, use of masks or visors. The possibility of screaming and singing is also different. “We hope that our work will lead to a smart reopening of events,” said Tim Boersma, of Fieldlab, the association that does the research at Reuters news agency.

It was impressive for the participants to be in a crowd, in group after weeks. One of the people inside the club explained: “We finally came out after so much sitting at home. And we have also done something useful ».

It is not the first such experiment. It has been done with a lecture, with a show at the theater, with a game and it will be done at a rap concert. In all cases, people were divided into groups and different rules were given to understand which ones are to have the least possible infection. Data analysis will take weeks.
