“All firefighters will have their vacations suspended,” says Ibaneis about reinforcement in the fight against fires

The governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), said this Monday (16) that he will determine the suspension of firefighters’ vacations to reinforce the fight against fires.

According to the governor, the idea is to reinforce the work not only in areas already affected by fire, but in areas with frequent fire outbreaks. Ibaneis states that professionals seconded to the National Force will also be called up.

“We will reinforce prevention by having firefighters go to places where fires are common and not just work when the fire has already started. All firefighters will have their vacations suspended, and firefighters who are on loan, including to the National Force, will return,” he told CNN Brasil.

Early Monday afternoon, the Fire Department reported that 32 calls for forest fires were being responded to in regions of the Federal District.

Brasília National Park has been suffering since Sunday (15) from a fire that has already destroyed 1,200 hectares, according to the Chico Mendes Institute for Conservation and Biodiversity (ICMBio).

CNN has learned that another 250 firefighters from two fire stations have been called in to help with the work. The operation is expected to be completed today.

Earlier this month, the Federal District also recorded a major fire in the Brasília National Forest (Flona). In five days, the flames consumed 2,586 hectares, equivalent to 45.85% of the conservation unit.

Forest fires intensified in August due to the dry weather, with 10,328 outbreaks, according to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

Direct aides of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) raise the suspicion, in private conversations, that the intensification of fires could be the result of an orchestrated movement against the government.
