All industry segments grew from the first to the second quarter of this year, according to National Accounts data compiled by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Industrial GDP rose 2.2% in the second quarter compared to the first, due to advances in all its components: mining and quarrying (2.2%), manufacturing (1.7%), construction (2.7%) and production and distribution of electricity, gas and water.
According to Rebeca Palis, coordinator of National Accounts at IBGE, construction lost a lot with Lava Jato, but it has been recovering for some time.
“This year is an election year, we also have public works going on. It is a year that favors the construction industry,” he recalled.
Regarding the good performance of electricity and water, Rebeca recalls that the more expensive thermal plants were shut down at the beginning of the year.
“In electricity, since the beginning of the year we have been shutting down the thermal plants, producing energy at a cheaper rate and this drives the added value of the activity up”, he added.
Still from the point of view of supply, the Agricultural GDP rose 0.5% in the second quarter of this year, but it was coming from a fall in the previous quarter.
In the first half, agriculture shrank 5.4% compared to the same period in 2021.
“What is pulling agriculture and livestock down is soy”, recalled Rebeca Palis.
