Apple first installed the laser rangefinder in the iPad Pro, which was released last spring. Later, a small sensor appeared in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, it is used to accurately determine the depth of the scene and the distance to people and objects (up to 5 meters from the camera). This technology provides advanced augmented reality and other unique capabilities such as the ability to instantly measure a person’s height.
Apple often introduces new features and capabilities on higher-end devices before redirecting them to more affordable devices in subsequent years. For example, OLED displays were used in the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, while the standard iPhone 11 has an LCD display.
