Alleged Russian attack causes ‘significant’ damage to hospital in Severodonetsk

A Russian military strike caused “significant” damage to a regional hospital in the eastern Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk, a video released by the Luhansk regional administration shows. THE CNN geolocated and verified the authenticity of the video.

The video begins with scenes of windows blown out on a hospital staircase. As the filming individual climbs the stairs, more debris and damage is seen, including a door ripped off its hinges.

Once outside the stairs, a tangle of metal, drywall and debris is seen outside a hospital room. In one room the windows were ripped out; the next room doesn’t have an entire wall – there’s a big hole in the building.

In a hallway, more wreckage scattered around hospital beds is seen.

Serhiy Hayday, head of Luhansk’s regional military administration, said a woman was killed in the military attack. THE CNN could not independently verify the fatality.

“The Russians knew that the hospital was not vacant and that there were patients with different conditions being treated by doctors,” Hayday said. “Even that didn’t stop them. In fact, the Orcs [russos] they wanted to kill the wounded and those who tried to help these villagers survive, their doctors.

“Ukrainians often refer to Russian soldiers with the pejorative “orcs”, comparing them to the antagonist army of JRR Tolkien’s fantasy “Lord of the Rings”.

Hayday said there are only two operating hospitals in Luhansk province: this one in Severodonetsk and one in the nearby city of Lysychansk.

He added that the regional hospital in Severodonetsk continues to operate despite “significant” damage and several floors damaged.
