At least 119 inmates escaped from a prison after heavy rain damaged the prison center in Suleja, near the Nigerian capital, Abuja, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said on Thursday (25).
The torrential rain on Wednesday (24) lasted several hours and destroyed parts of the prison, including the perimeter wall and surrounding buildings, according to the statement.
Agents were searching for the fugitives, and have recaptured 10 of them with the help of other security agencies so far.
In the past, members of the Islamic insurgent group Boko Haram have been detained in Suleja prison.
Prison escapes have become a major concern in Nigeria, where overcrowding, underfunding and lax security measures have created conditions ripe for it.
Thousands of inmates have escaped in recent years due to weak infrastructure and attacks. In July 2022, an Islamic State operation against a maximum security prison in the capital Abuja freed around 440 prisoners.
