Almost 20,000 dead from the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

The dead from the strong earthquakes that hit the southeast on Monday Turkey and the north Syria they now number around 20,000, according to upwardly revised local authority figures.

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the death toll in Turkey stands at 16,546. Syrian state media, citing the country’s health ministry, reported 1,347 dead and 2,295 wounded, but only in areas controlled by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

In the areas controlled by the anti-regime rebels, it is estimated that 2,000 people have been recovered dead so far. Today, four days after the disaster, a first convoy carrying humanitarian aid arrived in these zones. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in its statement said that the six trucks are carrying equipment for rescue teams as well as blankets, mattresses, tents and solar lamps, supplies that cover the needs of 5,000 people.

Yesterday, a UN representative warned that the Organization’s supplies in northwestern Syria are barely enough to feed 100,000 people for a week.
