More than 14 million people fled their homes in Ukrainesometime during the two years from Russian invasion of 2022 and 6.5 million of them still remain refugees abroadaccording to UN.
These numbers correspond to almost a third of Ukraine's population, the International Organization for Migration noted in a report marking the second anniversary of the start of the war on February 24, 2022.
The IOM clarified that the approximately 3.7 million Ukrainians who remain internally displaced should be added to the refugees abroad.
To date, approximately 4.5 million people have returned to their homes, either from other countries or from areas within Ukraine where they had taken refuge.
“The country is devastated and the loss of life and suffering continues,” IOM director general Amy Pope said in a statement. “The IOM salutes the Ukrainian government and people for their strength and resistance, as well as Ukraine's neighboring countries hosting those who fled to escape the war. We are fully committed to alleviating the suffering of the victims of the conflict and contributing to the rebirth of Ukraine,” he added.
That United Nations agency said it provided aid to some 6.5 million Ukrainians in their country as well as refugees hosted in 11 eastern European countries. “Nevertheless needs continue to grow and outstrip available resources“, the IOM emphasized, clarifying that during the first two years of the war it received 957 million dollars in donations for the Ukrainians. “We are counting on the support of our donors and local partners to overcome the challenges that await us to provide a better life for Ukrainians,” Pope said.
The Russian invasion, as reported by APE-MPE, caused the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. The United Nations estimates that $4.2 billion is needed this year alone to provide much-needed humanitarian aid to Ukraine and refugees abroad.
Many of the Ukrainians who have returned to their homes are facing serious challenges as they have no means of livelihood, their homes and infrastructure have been completely or partially destroyed. For this reason, “we will now have to focus on the economic recovery” of Ukraine, said Soda Federico, the director of the IOM's humanitarian program.
