Almost 80% of Brazilians have outstanding debt, points out CNC

In August of this year, almost eight out of ten Brazilians had debts due.

Data from the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), released this Monday morning (5), show that the index grew: it went from 78% in July 2022 to 79% in the following month.

In comparison with the same period last year, when the index was 72.9%, the increase was 6.1 percentage points.

The acceleration of indebtedness in August occurred in a similar way in the two income brackets surveyed, with a slight emphasis on Brazilians with lower purchasing power.

According to the study, families with up to ten times the minimum wage recorded an increase of 1.1 pp in contracting debt in relation to July (from 75% to 75.9%), compared to 0.9 pp for the richest families. (from 78.8% to 79.9%).

According to CNC economists, despite the improvement in the job market and income transfer policies, inflation challenges the earnings of families, especially those earning less than ten minimum wages.

The novelty highlighted by the entity in the survey is the growth, since May, in the volume of people indebted in booklets and store cards, reaching 19.4% in August, an increase of 0.5 pp compared to July and 1.2 pp. pp compared to the same period last year.

CNC points out that the result is explained by the search for cheaper credit among families with lower earnings. With interest rates rising, credit card use has fallen.

Among men and women, the most significant monthly increase in indebtedness was for men, with an increase of 1 pp in relation to July (from 77.5% to 78.3%).

In the female audience, the volume increased by 0.5 pp (80.6% to 81.9%).
