The numbers keep growing. In just over a month of conflict, more than 10 million people were forced to flee their homes in search of safety. According to estimates by the United Nations (UN), the equivalent of a quarter of the population of Ukraine. At least 3.7 million citizens have already found refuge in other countries.
The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, warns of the vulnerability of the majority of the displaced. At least 60% of them are accompanied by children.
Pregnant women, the elderly, people with chronic diseases and limited mobility are in a situation of “the magnitude of human suffering”; defined the director general of the International Organization for Migration, the Portuguese António Vitorino.
According to UN estimates, around 6.5 million men, women and children have internally migrated within Ukraine, and around 13 million people may be trapped in areas affected by the bombings or prevented from leaving by the destruction of bridges and roads; or even out of fear of having nowhere to find safe accommodation.
One of the main concerns of the United Nations emergency services is the protection of humanitarian aid posts. UNHCR denounced that sanitary facilities are also being attacked by bombs, on average, twice a day.
The World Health Organization counted 52 attacks in 25 days against these posts that provide essential aid. These include medicines, health care and financial resources.
UNHCR is implementing a multipurpose financial assistance program in Lviv and Zakharpatia provinces. And six other regions in central and eastern Ukraine will also be incorporated into the project. The objective is to supply the basic needs of at least 360 thousand people.
About 186,000 displaced people are of other nationalities, including Brazilians.
Since the beginning of March, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has opened two consular service points for Brazilian citizens who wish to leave Ukraine. They were established in the cities of Lviv, on the Polish border, and in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, for those seeking a way out through Romania.
UNHCR monitors the number of displacements daily. About 150 workers and volunteers remain at border posts, transit and reception centers to welcome and guide refugees.
The main destinations for the displaced have been Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Russia and Slovakia. The Polish territory alone registered the entry of more than two million people until March 25th.
As for domestic aid, the World Food Program has already provided products to more than 330,000 people since the beginning of the war. In the Ukrainian capital Kiev, 26 tons of emergency food were delivered, and in the besieged city of Kharkiv another 78 tons were distributed.
In the last week, 20,000 emergency kits were delivered to people to protect themselves from the cold and rain, and to make small repairs to their damaged homes.
