Almost a ton of cocaine was carried by a sailing ship sailing off the coast of Portugal

Almost a ton cocaine detected in sailing vessel which sailed off the Portuguese coast. The drugs were seized and the sole occupant of the boat, a 53-year-old man, was arrested.

The operation of the prosecuting authorities took place on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, “about 370 kilometers off the Portuguese coasts“, said the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, Arthur Vaz, in a press conference and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

The 16-meter-long Polish-flagged sailboat had sailed from a Latin American country and the drugs are believed to have been destined for various European countries. It sailed from the Almada naval base, south of Lisbon, on Thursday morning.

“We are seeing increased flows of drugs, particularly cocaine and hashish, into Europe,” said Arthur Vaz, noting that the “larger shipments of cocaine are mostly done by containers.”
