Samsung was the first Android device maker to announce four years of software support for some of its smartphones. Later, OnePlus, OPPO and Xiaomi followed suit, who also promised updates within four years. Google, which to some extent makes reference Pixel smartphones on pure Android, is in the very tail. But now the search giant has decided to bypass everyone and offer the longest-running software support in the Android market.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be the first Google smartphones with five years of support. The information was found on the Pixel product pages on the CarphoneWarehouse website, but after a while it was removed. The software section of the upcoming smartphones mentions the following:
“The Pixel will be updated for at least 5 years, so it becomes more secure over time.”
However, the terms mention Android security updates. This likely means smartphones will receive updates to the Android operating system for three or four years and additional security updates for one or two years. Everything is definitely moving in the right direction, and there is nothing special about it. For example, Apple is releasing 5 and even 6 major operating system updates for all of its smartphones, and would like Google to match Apple’s software support.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will truly be the company’s first flagship smartphones in recent years. They finally have a design change, a 120Hz OLED display, their own high-performance Tensor processor, updated sensors for the main and front cameras, IP68 water protection, stereo speakers, 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and a large capacity battery. The premiere of new products will take place on October 19.
