Alpha Bank provides substantial support to make Astypalaia a model island in the field of sustainability in the Mediterranean. As mentioned in today’s announcement of the bank, with the educational initiative “Circular economy in practice” that it has designed and implemented for the environmental awareness of the students of the island, but also as a Big Sponsor of “AstyBus”, the new “green” and on- demand of electric transport service on the island, Alpha Bank reaffirms its commitment to the continuous increase of its positive imprint on society and the environment.

The Prime Minister in the first smart and sustainable greenhouse

Alpha Bank’s educational initiative “Circular Economy in Practice” was the basis for the first smart and sustainable greenhouse, built in the garden of the Primary School by the students together with the educational team of the Bank and the NGO SciCo.

The greenhouse is made exclusively with plastic bottles, which were collected and reused by the children of the Primary School, while it is equipped with sensors of temperature, humidity and soil, which are powered by solar panels, so that it is energy autonomous, as well as a compost bin for reuse of waste.

The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was yesterday at the primary school of the island in order to visit the original environmental work of the children and to be informed about the initiative of the Bank to contribute to the education of the new generation of Astypalea in the principles of the circular economy. The Prime Minister was welcomed by the CEO of the Alpha Bank Group Vassilis Psaltis and the Deputy Minister of Education Zetta Makri, along with students and teachers of the primary school.

According to the announcement of Alpha Bank, the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis talked to the students and congratulated them for their effort: “You have shown what we can do, in this amazing greenhouse that you have built. I think you will keep this experience as you grow up. “You will find other ways to take part in this great effort, because if we want to save the planet we all need to put our own stone. With small moves, sometimes, we can make a big difference,” the prime minister told the children.

In the context of the speech he addressed to the inhabitants of the island, Mr. Mitsotakis also referred to the initiative of Alpha Bank that took shape with the contribution of the students. At the Primary School of Astypalea, with the kind sponsorship of Alpha Bank, the children of the fifth and sixth Primary School completed a very nice and very impressive project, where they used technology to build a smart greenhouse, proving in an experiential way that “Technology can help us change our lives and that each and every one of us has a role to play in this great effort that we have to make, to make the green transition a reality,” he said. This new generation, these 11-year-olds and 12-year-olds will soon be the citizens of tomorrow, they will take the baton from us, they will innovate and we must instill in them exactly these ideas, train them to see knowledge as a creative process, to realize the importance of these experiential interventions and of course to understand that change starts with each and every one of us. let”.

The students of the Primary School of Astypalea presented to Mr. Mitsotakis and Psaltis the principles of operation of the greenhouse and the solutions they found in order to ensure its “circular” operation.

After his conversation with the students, but also the teaching staff of the School, the CEO of the Alpha Bank Group Vassilis Psaltis stated: As the only Bank on the island, we support the local community and economy and actively support the Astybus initiative for a functional and environmentally friendly transport network, while contributing to environmental awareness by putting the circular economy in the daily lives of its residents. “Astypalea and especially the children, the citizens of tomorrow of our country. The active participation and the smile of the students and teachers of the Primary School of Astypalea make me optimistic for the success of the project”.

The pilot program “Circular Economy in Practice”, created by Alpha Bank with the approval of the Ministry of Education and Religions and in collaboration with the Non-Profit Organization SciCo (Science Communication) includes a series of training workshops in the schools of Astypalea. The workshops were initially addressed to the students of the Primary School and will continue with the new school year, taking on the character of a wider educational program for the training of teachers and students of High School and Lyceum.

In the first round of workshops, the content focused on the issue of availability and alternatives for securing natural resources, as well as the use of technology for their more efficient use.

Alpha Bank is the Large Sponsor of “AstyBus”, a new on-demand service that will operate in Astypalea, using electric vans, which will offer greater convenience to the movement of residents and tourists, as its route will be configured based on the needs of passengers, at preferential prices.

“AstyBus” is implemented by the State in collaboration with the Volkswagen Group

During his stay on the island, the CEO of Alpha Bank visited the management and charging center ASTYBUS Hub, where he was guided by Volkswagen executives, while he had the opportunity to meet with the Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen Group Dr. Herbert Diess.
