In the second quarter of 2021, sales of smartwatches worldwide grew by 27% compared to the same period in 2021. Among the manufacturers, the most notable growth was shown by Samsung and Garmin. On the other hand, the market share of Amazfit, Huawei and Apple has significantly decreased. This is stated in a new report prepared by analysts at the research firm Counterpoint Research following the results of the last quarter.
The American company Apple remains the unchanged leader despite the decline in market share. If in the second quarter of last year it owned 30.1% of the world market, then a year later the share dropped to 28%. In the last quarter, the base of active Apple Watch users exceeded 100 million – this is the lion’s share of all smartwatch owners in the world. The United States remains the main market for Apple Watch, as more than half of all users are concentrated there.
The second place in the global market is occupied by the Chinese brand Huawei, which lost a significant part of the market in a year as a result of the US sanctions. Now its share is 9.3% against 13.1% a year ago. The South Korean company Samsung rose from the fourth place to the third in a year. Its share in the global smartwatch market has grown from 6.8% to 7.6%. Garmin, which now controls 5.8% of the world market, also managed to break into the top five.
Despite the fact that Apple Watch is still the most popular smartwatch, analysts are recording an increase in demand for budget smartwatches. According to Counterpoint Research, sales of smartwatches that cost less than $ 100 in a year grew by a record 547%, that is, almost 5.5 times. Analysts explain the interest of users in budget models by the appearance at the initial level of such functions as monitoring the heart rate and monitoring the level of oxygen in the blood.
TOP 5 best-selling smartwatch models in the second quarter of 2021 according to Counterpoint Research:
- Apple Watch Series 6;
- Apple Watch Series SE;
- Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2;
- Apple Watch Series 3;
- Imoo Z6-4G.
