Amazon employees strike in Germany for better wages

Workers in some warehouses of the Amazon on Germany began a strike on Monday (1), said service sector union Verdi, as part of a long battle with the US company for better wages and working conditions.

O Verdi said he called the last strike to demand an increase in wages in line with the agreements the union has made with the wider retail and postal service in Germany.

The union said workers at three Amazon warehouses in the states of Saxony and Hesse would go on strike on Monday, coinciding with All Saints Day, which is a holiday in some German states.

It was not informed how many workers joined the strike on Monday. Workers at four more locations will go on strike in the early hours of Tuesday (2) and the strikes will last from 24 hours to up to three days, Verdi said.

Verdi said it wants Amazon to recognize collective agreements in the retail and postal sector and reach an agreement on fair working conditions with the company.

Amazon said in a statement that it offers excellent salaries, benefits and career opportunities, not feeling any impact on its customers as a result of the strike.
