The European Union has imposed a record high fine of € 746 million on Amazon for processing personal data in violation of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Luxembourg’s National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) imposed a fine in a decision dated July 16. This became known now, when the company filed reports.
Amazon will appeal the fine, according to a company spokesman. The e-commerce giant called CNPD’s decision unreasonable.

The GDPR requires companies to ask for people’s consent before using their personal data. Otherwise, companies face heavy fines.
Globally, regulatory oversight of tech giants is intensifying following a string of privacy and misinformation scandals and complaints of market power abuse. Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft are already gaining increased attention in Europe.
