Amazon introduced an autonomous robot: he works with people in a warehouse

Today, June 22, Amazon employees officially unveiled their first fully autonomous robot called Proteus, which is already performing its tasks – moving large carts with various goods around the warehouse. Also, the company’s specialists said that their new robot has an important feature – it performs its tasks not in special restricted areas, as it was previously with some developments, but together with human workers in a common workspace. At the same time, the robot moves carefully, without harming the safety of other warehouse employees.

For this, Amazon engineers have integrated many technologies into the robot that are responsible for the safety of movement, recognition of objects in the Proteus movement path, and a space navigation system. Accordingly, the novelty, before starting to move, scans the space in front of it using a number of sensors, while emitting green light on the front of the case. If there are no obstacles, the robot starts moving along a pre-compiled route, but if a person (or any other obstacle) appears in its path, the device stops immediately.

Proteus will continue to move only after the person leaves his route, so you should not worry about safety, according to Amazon employees. Moreover, thanks to such an advanced system, the robot provides the company with many work automation scenarios – for example, Proteus can move non-automated wheeled carts that are used in Amazon warehouses to transport parcels from compartment to compartment. Now the company believes that robots of this type will be used to automate the work with parcels in sorting centers, which will significantly speed up the work process.

And, of course, Amazon has already made an official statement that the use of robots when transporting parcels in warehouses will not lead to job cuts – the company does not plan to replace human jobs with its robots. One of the Amazon engineers even said that it is simply impossible to replace a person with a robot in modern realities, since technology does not allow performing a whole chain of actions. On the other hand, robots are already carrying carts, and what will happen in five to ten years is an open question.
