The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) pointed out a trend of increased deforestation in the Amazon, from the alerts of the Detering Detection Detection System (Deter), available on the Terrabrasilis platform. According to data presented on Thursday (8), April had a 55% increase in forest suppression alerts compared to April 2024.
Although the accumulated between August last year and April of this year point out 5% drop in deforestation in the Amazon, the increase recorded last month is mobilizing the federal government authorities.
“We are identifying a possible reversal in the deforestation curve. And April draws attention because it was a significant increase over the series we had had. So, then, [houve] An Interministerial Commission Meeting [de controle e combate ao desmatamento] To know these numbers in detail and summon the whole organs to, in the coming days, we have there about two weeks, as we agreed, to organize and readjust the measurements, identifying the main outbreaks where this occurred, where they are concentrated, what are the main vectors and make the adjustments to maintain falling deforestation, ”said the executive secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) “The goal is to arrive on July 31 with deforestation over the previous year,” he added.
According to INPE, most recent deforestation alerts occurred in areas of Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Pará. Before this discharge, the drop in deforestation between January and April this year was already showing slowdown, falling only 1%.
In relation to the accumulated of recent years, compared between 2024 and 2022, the fall in deforestation reaches 45.7%. “Our commitment is to have a consistent and lasting drop in deforestation,” said Minister Marina Silva, emphasizing the involvement of 19 ministries in coordinating efforts to monitor the increase in deforestation over the next few weeks.
“We do not want to wait for the annual rate with a little more deforestation to be able to reevaluate and see what we need to do the following year. As we have this tool, which allows us to identify trends, we identified that we are still with a positive balance, has stabilized in the last four months had a small peak in April. It may only be a peak that reverses the following month, but it may not be,” Territorial Environmental of MMA, André Lima.
Cerrado and Pantanal
In the Cerrado, Inpe also identified an increase in deforestation alerts in April, and 26%compared to the same month last year. In August from last year until April this year, the situation is a consistent drop, around 25%. Cerrado’s official deforestation rate last year had a 25.7% drop, the first drop in five years.
Already in the Pantanal, Deter registered a 77% drop in deforestation alerts in April, with no focus of the fire noted.
New Plans
Following the meeting of the Permanent Interministerial Committee on Deforestation Prevention and Control, Minister Marina Silva also announced the approval of the deforestation and deforestation plans of the Atlantic Forest and Pampa, which are the two missing plans. The other biomes in the country already have their plans in force.
Warning system
According to technicians from INPE and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), Deter makes a rapid survey of evidence alerts to change vegetation cover in the Amazon and the Cerrado. This survey is considered the main instrument for overseeing and controlling deforestation and forest degradation, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and other environmental agencies.
Nevertheless, the platform is not intended to accurately measure deforested areas, which is done by the Inpe Amazon deforestation project (Prodes), prepared by INPE annually, between August to July of the following year, comprising the highest drought periods of the two monitored biomes.
