Amazonas has 20 cities in emergency during critical month for drought; see measures adopted

The effects of the drought in the state of Amazonas have been felt since July, according to data from the state government’s monitoring system.

Civil Defense reported that river levels in the Amazon are below what is expected for the period in all channels.

According to measurements taken at the Port of Manaus, the level of the Rio Negro is at 26.14 meters this Thursday (18). The waters reached 26.79 meters at the beginning of the month. From yesterday to today, there was a reduction of 6 centimeters.

In response, Governor Wilson Lima (União Brasil) declared a state of emergency due to drought in 20 municipalities (check the list below) . Furthermore, on the 5th, the Drought Response Committee was established in the state, made up of 33 departments and government bodies.

In parallel, a Technical-Scientific Committee was established, made up of 10 experts responsible for advising public management in decision-making.

Among the main measures adopted to tackle the problem, according to Civil Defense, are:

  • Drinking water supply;
  • Health supplies and medicines;
  • Rural production;
  • Logistics for maintaining the functioning of the state education network;
  • Humanitarian help.

According to the government, in May, the issuance of environmental licenses for dredging in four stretches of rivers in the Amazon was announced.

Work to contain the drought, this time, began last year, after the Amazon suffered from a historic drought.

In October 2023, the level of the Rio Negro reached its lowest level in 121 years, since measurements began, at 13.59 meters.

Among the planned projects is the maintenance of the functioning of the state education network so that climate change does not interfere with the progress of students in public schools.

In a note, the state government reported that “the State Secretariat of Education and Sports is in the execution phase to implement the projects ‘Aula em Casa’ and ‘Merenda em Casa’”.
