Intergovernmental crackdown once again in Italy on the occasion of the statements of the Ministry of Defense about the supply of weapons to Ukraine “capable of hitting Russian positions”. Pressure on Draghi for more transparency.
Italy strongly supports Ukraine and its resistance to the Russian invasion. It is clear, however, that the first substantial problems are beginning to arise. There is no unanimity within Mario Draghi’s government. The Five Stars asked the Italian Prime Minister to inform the parliament in detail before visiting Washington the day after and before his possible trip to Kyiv. But the Italian technocrat prime minister did not respond.
Through their former prime minister and leader, Giuseppe Conte, the “five stars” insist that in the management of the current phase, there is not the same transparency that characterized the treatment of the pandemic and call for more efforts to prevail negotiation and peace.
What did the Italian Ministry of Defense mean?
At the same time, the statement of the Italian, center-left defense minister Lorenzo Guerini caused great concern. “Italy will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against the Russian attack and with equipment capable of neutralizing the positions from which Russia indiscriminately bombs cities and the civilian population,” the Italian minister said.
Both the League and the Five Stars (despite being part of Draghi-led broad government alliance) immediately demanded an explanation. “After two and a half months we have to ask ourselves who these weapons end up with. It is clear that there is a need to defend Ukraine but these people urgently need a ceasefire,” said Lega secretary Matteo Salvini.
Pressure (and) in view of the local authorities of June
Finally, the Minister of Defense, in a new explanatory statement, added that “as decided by the parliament, Italy supports the Ukrainian resistance with military equipment. With defense weapons systems”. Many observers, however, continue to stress that ambiguity prevails and that the distinction between offensive and defensive weapons can only be considered hypothetical.
At present, the government does not disclose what kind of weapons it is and cites security reasons, which concern the country and Ukraine itself. It is clear, however, that tensions – within Draghi’s governing coalition – continue to rise due to the need for various political forces to field new, recognizable positions in the run-up to the June 12 local elections.
