Ambulance driver dies while helping Palestinians after attack

A Palestinian Red Crescent Society ambulance driver was killed while transporting Palestinians injured in a settler attack in the West Bank on Saturday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

Driver Mohammed Awad Allah Mohammed Musa, 50, was killed when the ambulance was struck by gunfire, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society told CNN . According to her, the shots were fired by Israeli settlers.

In a separate incident, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) detained another ambulance crew at the entrance to Thabet Thabet hospital in Tulkarm, West Bank, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said.

In photos shared by the organization, the ambulance team is seen inside an IDF vehicle while surrounded by Israeli soldiers. The Red Crescent Society claims the crew was detained and interrogated while trying to carry out “humanitarian work”.

A CNN reached out to the IDF for comment but has not yet heard back.

Earlier on Saturday, the IDF said security forces had killed “10 terrorists” in an ongoing operation in the Nur Shams refugee camp, east of Tulkarm in the occupied West Bank.

It said in a statement that “IDF and Israel Border Police forces continue extensive anti-terrorism activities in the Nur Shams area. So far, security forces have eliminated 10 terrorists during the encounters, detained eight wanted suspects, exposed explosive devices and routes, and searched structures.”

They said eight IDF soldiers and one Border Force officer were slightly or moderately injured.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health condemned both the detention of the ambulance crew and “the deliberate killing of an ambulance driver…on Saturday night while he was carrying out his humanitarian duty in transporting (people with) wounds caused by settler gunfire near the city from Al-Sawiya, south of Nablus.”

The ministry said in a statement that it “urgently calls on international health organizations, human rights institutions and the International Committee of the Red Cross to act urgently to contain the escalation of occupation and settler practices against treatment centers and staff.” doctors, and to enable them to fulfill their humanitarian duty.”

“Attacking doctors, ambulances, treatment centers and medical personnel, obstructing their movement and preventing them from reaching the injured, constitutes a flagrant and clear violation of international humanitarian law and international norms and treaties,” the ministry said.
