AMD Announces Zen 4 Laptop Architecture, Reveals Zen 5, RNDA 3, and 4 Launch Dates

AMD has released a schedule for the release of new microarchitectures for CPUs and GPUs over the next few years. The company intends to move to more advanced production nodes and will cover the segments of laptops, desktops and servers.

In particular, the Ryzen 7000 series of processors will be based on the future Zen 4 architecture. Compared to Zen 3, performance per clock should increase by 8-10%, and single-threaded performance will increase by 15%. According to Cinebench, the new architecture delivers over a 25% performance-per-watt improvement, with a 35% increase in overall performance. In addition, the transition to DDR5 will provide higher memory bus bandwidth.

The first desktop and server samples made using the 5nm process should appear later this year. However, notebook processors will be manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process. The Phoenix Point family of chips due out next year will feature Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 graphics. They will be followed by Strix Point based on Zen 5 and RDNA 3+. The company does not specify the production technology of these processors, but it will be an improved technical process.

AMD describes Zen 5 as a completely new microarchitecture, but there are very few details. Processors based on it will be produced using both 4nm and 3nm TSMC process technology. If the first option is just an optimized version of the 5nm manufacturing process, then the second is completely different. The first Zen 5-based chips are expected in 2024.

In terms of AMD graphics products, the next RDNA 3 architecture will adopt a 5nm process and be the first to feature a chiplet design. Also expected are improved compute units and a built-in 2nd generation Infinity Cache cache. According to the company, the performance per watt will improve by at least 50% compared to RDNA 2. Some products will be built on the RDNA 3+ architecture, and the next major upgrade will come with the launch of RDNA 4, which is expected in 2024.
