Rumors are circulating on the web about the AMD Zen 4 microarchitecture, according to which the next generation Epyc server processor based on Zen 4 (codenamed Genoa) will contain up to 128 cores. That’s double the current Epyc 7003 lineup.
There have been earlier reports that AMD Zen 4 based processors will have over 64 cores with new instructions such as AVX-512, BFloat16 and others. These new instructions come in handy for HPC and server workloads.
Intel has added AVX-512 instructions to its Rocket Lake architecture processors with impressive performance gains in compatible scenarios. According to AnandTech, even the 8-core Rocket Lake-S was able to bypass the 64-core Zen 2 Epyc in the 3D Particle Movement AVX benchmark.
It is already known that the fourth generation Epyc processors will be installed inside the future Exascale supercomputer, dubbed El Capitan. El Capitan is expected to be released in 2023 and used to oversee US nuclear research.
