In 2020, AMD embarked on an ambitious project to develop Wi-Fi modules under its own brand. This has been driven in part by the launch of the Ryzen Pro line of mobile processors, designed to compete with the Intel Core vPro processors available to laptop OEMs along with Intel WLAN modules. A proprietary AMD module is expected to hit the market this year.

The AMD RZ608 WLAN module supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax in the 6 GHz band), being compatible with previous Wi-Fi standards, and Bluetooth 5.2. The module uses the element base MediaTek. So AMD was able to bypass the intellectual property issues required to develop such a product from scratch. According to reports, the module will debut in AYANEO portable consoles, and later it may start appearing in notebooks powered by AMD Ryzen 5000 “Cezanne” processors. Whether it will make it to desktop platforms is still unknown.
