Americas have peak of Covid cases; Russia and Ukraine reach ‘dead end’

The spread of Covid-19 in the Americas, driven by the Ômicron variant, has reached levels of transmission never seen before during the pandemic. The number of cases per week has doubled to 6.1 million, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The United States accounts for most of the new cases, especially in the East Coast and Midwest states. Argentina and Paraguay recorded 300% increases in the number of new cases in the last week. Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru are also facing significant increases in new infections.

In this episode of CNN Mundo, Lourival Sant’Anna presents a balance of international concerns with the new phase of the pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that more than half of Europeans will be infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus within the next six to eight weeks.

Another highlight of the podcast this week is the tension between Russia and Ukraine. After a week of meetings with Americans and Europeans, the Russian government said that negotiations on the situation on the border with the neighboring country had reached a dead end and there was nothing more to talk about. Polish Chancellor Zbigniew Rau opened a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) saying that the risk of war in the region is the greatest in the last 30 years – that is, since the end of the Soviet Union.
