The spread of Covid-19 in the Americas, driven by the Ômicron variant, has reached levels of transmission never seen before during the pandemic. The number of cases per week has doubled to 6.1 million, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The United States accounts for most of the new cases, especially in the East Coast and Midwest states. Argentina and Paraguay recorded 300% increases in the number of new cases in the last week. Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru are also facing significant increases in new infections.

Polish Chancellor Zbigniew Rau opened a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) saying that the risk of war in the region is the greatest in the last 30 years – that is, since the end of the Soviet Union.
