Four of Boris Johnson’s closest aides resigned on Thursday in a turbulent day for his government, as the British prime minister tries to reinvigorate his administration in the face of scandals that have put his job at risk.
Johnson is facing a growing crisis amid criticism over a series of alcohol-fueled parties held at his Downing Street office and residence during lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Angry lawmakers in his own Conservative Party, some of whom have already called for his resignation, have demanded a review of his Downing Street record if he is to remain in power.
On Thursday, three of his top aides — Chief of Staff Dan Rosenfield, Chief Private Secretary Martin Reynolds and Communications Director Jack Doyle — resigned in what some Conservative lawmakers said looked like the beginning of reform. somewhat disorganized under Johnson.
However, a quarter resigned over a barb that Johnson delivered to the leader of the main opposition Labor Party, something his finance minister also criticized him for.
Johnson vowed to change his leadership style after a report by civil servant Sue Gray about meetings held at her Downing Street office and residence pointed to “serious leadership failures”.
