Amidst a Chinese veto, the Brazilian government will export beef to Russia

China’s embargo on Brazilian beef has lasted more than two months. But the minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, announced this Wednesday (17) that Russia is going to sign a partnership with Brazil to export meat with a zero import tariff for six months.

“The Russian government announced that it will open a quota of 300,000 tons of meat (200,000 tons of beef and 100,000 tons of pork) with a zero import tariff for six months, a market that can be used by Brazil,” posted on your Twitter profile.

Earlier this month, a survey by the Brazilian Association of Meat Shops (Abrafrigo) showed that the volume of Brazilian beef exports dropped 43% in October when compared to the same period in 2020.

The Chinese veto on Brazilian meat is directly reflected in these numbers. China is the main buyer of national beef and corresponds to 60% of shipments made in Brazilian ports.

President Jair Bolsonaro said, in an interview with Cultura FM radio, on November 10, that the blockade of China is not a consequence of his relationship with the Asian country or with the president Xi Jinping.

Russia had also imposed restrictions on Brazilian beef after two atypical cases of the “mad cow” disease were detected in slaughterhouses located in Brazil.

A new agreement with the Eastern European country could restore security to countries that imported Brazilian meat, something the Brazilian government has been trying to do, showing that the country has no records of cases of mad cow disease contagion among the animals.
