Ammonia leak from train derailment in Serbia – 51 people showed symptoms of poisoning

A train derailed on Sunday night in the Pirot region of southeastern Serbia, causing ammonia to leak from a carriage.

At least 51 people showed symptoms of poisoning, according to Mayor Vladan Vasic, who added that seven of them were taken to a hospital in Nis.

He pointed out that a part of Pirot — a city of about 60,000 inhabitants — was declared in a state of emergency, due to the dispersion of a large amount of ammonia in the atmosphere.

Serbia’s interior ministry appealed to residents of the area not to leave their homes. Traffic was temporarily blocked on several roads after authorities have cordoned off a four-kilometer zone around the scene of the train accident.

The 20 carriages of the derailed train were carrying toxic materials from neighboring Bulgaria, according to state-owned rail freight company Srbija Kargo.
