“Amputating the State-owned Companies Law is a setback”, says Michel Temer

Former President Michel Temer (MDB) spoke in a note this Wednesday (22) about what he called news about changes in the State-owned Companies Law. He says he feels “civic sadness” and makes an appeal about the possibility of changes in the legislation, as reported by anchor Daniela Lima from CNN .

“Amputating the State-Owned Companies Law is a setback. There will be demands on the part of society”, says the former president in the statement.

The State-Owned Companies Law was created in 2016, during Temer’s administration, and was designed with the objective of creating a protection between company policy and governance.

This week, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), declared, after a meeting with leaders of groups and with the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), that the federal government and the Ministry of Economy need to be directly involved in discussions about SOEs.

“There is a feeling, almost unanimous, on the part of all the leaders who participated in this meeting, that the Ministry of Economy and the federal government must also be directly involved in these discussions, participate more closely and act more closely in these discussions” , said Lira at the time.

“Like, for example, instead of formatting a PEC [Proposta de Emenda Constitucional]in matters that are constitutional or bills of matters that are infra-constitutional, can be resolved more quickly through provisional measures, which may amend some aspects of Law 13,303, or the State-Owned Companies Law, which allow for greater synergy between state-owned companies and the government of the moment”, continued the president of the Chamber.

This Monday (20), the president of Petrobras, José Mauro Coelho resigned from his position. The decision came three days after a new increase in fuel prices and amid pressure from the government.

“I have to say that such an initiative should not even be considered.

What is expected of the political world is to continually improve Brazilian legislation and institutions, not to promote setbacks.

The law that is intended to be amputated meant the moralization of public activities undertaken by state-owned companies and a major advance in the country’s political customs.

It had the merit of professionalizing the management of these companies and, with its new rules, allowed Petrobras to recover from the pre-bankruptcy crisis in less than a year and a half.

State-owned companies provide great services to the country and need to be protected. So the news about the changes causes me civic sadness. It is with great concern that I ask for responsibility, serenity and balance from the leaders who command the destiny of the country today. But be sure, if there is a setback, the charge will come!”
