The director David O. Russell (“Silver Bright Side” and “American Hustle”) returned to theaters with the epic thriller “Amsterdam” . The film mixes fact and fiction to tell the story of three friends who fight and reveal a political conspiracy in the 1930s.
In a press release, Russell says that “the plot is based on shocking and fascinating historical events” and that the central element of the production is the pact made by the protagonists. “Friendship and love are the foundation of the film and, for me, the most important thing is the friendship between these characters.”
The director used historical figures to create the fictional characters of the plot. The 369 New York Regiment, to which protagonists Burt (Christian Bale) and Harold (John David Washington) belonged, was inspired by the Harlem Hellfighters, a segregated regiment of African-American and Puerto Rican soldiers that was sent to France to defend the country in World War I.
The character Valerie (Margot Robbie) was inspired by several female artists of the time. While General Gil Dillenbeck (Robert De Niro), Russell was inspired by Smedley Butler, a major general in the United States Marine Corps.
In the communiqué, Ballet says: “David integrated these characters into a series of historical events that took place across the US in a story about three friends who, in times of war, make a pact to protect each other no matter what. Humor emerges from the real people and situations they find themselves in.”
The director places the film as a period production, but very contemporary. “This is a turning point in history, it is a time when the world can turn upside down or stay as it was. The characters are on the brink of it, but they don’t know it.”
“It’s mysterious, it’s fascinating, it’s treacherous, and because of that, for me it’s an inspiring story,” he said. David O. Russell .
The production is a big Hollywood stage and has brought big stars to the big screen. Starring Christian Bale (The Winner and American Psycho), John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman and Malcolm & Marie) and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street and I, Tonya), the film also features singer Taylor Swift. ; from Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver and Goodfellas); Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody and Mr. Robot); Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) and more.
It is the third film that Russell and Bale work together. Later, the actor starred “The winner” (2010), which won him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and “Cheating” (2013). The production development process began five years ago with a dinner between the director and Bale, who, in addition to being the protagonist, also served as the producer of the feature.
“Amsterdam” premiered in Brazilian cinemas on Thursday (5).
