Amsterdam is preparing to hold the largest Vermeer exhibition ever

The countdown to the largest ever Vermeer exhibition has begun and it is expected to run on Amsterdam.

Despite his recognition as one of the maitr painters of the Dutch Golden Age, Johannes Vermeer produced a small number of works; only 35 are attributed to him today. This February – until June – some 28 of these works will be exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the exhibition it will be “the opportunity of a lifetime” for art lovers to see so many of his works brought together.

The paintings they arrive, as the Athens News Agency reports, from museums around the world, including the Frick Collection in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Gemäldegalerie Galerie in Berlin. Some, from private collections and have never been publicly exhibited.

It is the first time that the Rijksmuseum organizes an exhibition on Vermeer, who lived and created in Delft. The museum cooperates with the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, which lends the famous painting “The Girl with the Pearl Earring”. In his paintings, Vermeer depicts 17th century Dutch cityscapes, house interiors and portraits of people in their everyday life.

“Vermeer is one of the most amazing artists who ever lived,” said Taco Dibbits, Director General of the Rijksmuseum. “He was able to create an intimacy that people had never seen before.”
