Amsterdam: The impressive residential complex with 442 apartments floating on the water

Sluishuis’ designs were unveiled by Danish architecture firm BIG and Dutch studio Barcode Architects.

“We conceived the idea of ​​our Sluishuis as a central Amsterdam building block floating on the IJ lake, complete with all the features of city life,” said Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG.

The panoramic view and the hundreds of apartments

“Toward the side of the city, the building bends its knee to invite visitors to climb on its roof and enjoy the panoramic view of the new districts on the IJ,” he added, as reported by the Athens News Agency.

Described by the two architectural firms as “a new landmark for IJburg”, the residential complex comprises 442 owner-occupied and rented apartments apartments. The four blocks surround a courtyard that descends to the water. On the ground floor, opening onto the courtyard, a sailing school, a water sports center and a restaurant with a large terrace.

“On the water side, the Sluishuis emerges from the river opening a giant gate to dock boats,” Bjarke Ingels pointed out. “A building inside the port, with a port inside the building,” he added.

Above the ground floor, the building blocks, which are clad in aluminum to reflect the surrounding water, include a wide range of apartments of different sizes, from studios to penthouses. On the two highest floors, penthouses.

The apartments on the sloping levels of the architectural structure have a direct view of the water. Where the blocks step to create terraces they are clad in wood to contrast with the exterior aluminum finish.

Two large staircases ascend the two corner facades leading to a public green roof and a garden with a rooftop walkway. The entire complex has a pier with 34 berths for boats that have been converted into residences and 54 berths for pleasure boats.
