It was July 23, 2011 when the British media gave news of the tragic death of twenty-seven-year-old Amy Winehouse, an unforgettable singer of great talent, who after more than ten years continues to be a style icon. What killed her was a cocktail of alcohol and drugs, which reached its peak a tormented story of alcohol and drug addiction, loneliness and emotional difficulties probably never really resolved.
Amy would have turned forty on September 14, 2023. Born in 1983 in Enfield, a large city north of London into a family of professional jazz musicians and music enthusiasts. His grandmother Cynthia was a singer, and had dated English jazz saxophonist Ronnie Scott at the time. His uncles played in London jazz clubs, and his father was a fan of Frank Sinatra: he sang with him Fly Me to the Moonwhich had become somewhat of their heart song over the years.
Wondering what Amy’s life would have been like today is one of her dearest friends, the writer and performer Chantelle Dusettewhich also appeared in the 2021 BBC documentary Reclaiming Amy. In those images, which also included an interview with the singer of Back to Black, Amy said that in ten years she could imagine herself having a family, and perhaps with two or three children. A vision that at the time had already made Chantelle emotionally collapse, who had commented in tears how much her best friend would have been a wonderful mother.
“I deeply miss the way he hugged, like a bear,” says Chantelle on the occasion of what would have been Amy Winehouse’s fortieth birthday. “I felt surrounded by her, which is strange, considering I could keep her in my pocket. I’m six feet tall, and she wasn’t.”
“Amy is still one of the brightest and funniest people I’ve ever met,” continues her friend, who met Amy when she was only nineteen, but was already gifted with extraordinary talent. “And his laugh was truly one of the best sounds ever. Deep and strong.” So, Chantelle imagines how they would have celebrated today, if Amy hadn’t so tragically passed away. “She loved cooking with her friends,” she says, recalling a birthday she spent making meatballs. “We probably still would have done that now.”
