An appeal for the opening of a humanitarian corridor in Ukraine, Borel addressed

A dramatic call for the opening of a humanitarian corridor in Ukraine was made today by the High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, shortly after the extraordinary EU Council of Foreign Ministers, in which the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmitry Kusleba, participated by televised.

“Putin must allow humanitarian aid to reach Ukraine,” Borrell said. “We need green corridors for aid to pass to the Ukrainian people, women and children; there is a shortage of food and basic goods,” he said. The constant bombardment by Russian forces hits schools, hospitals, with the aim of destroying Ukraine and resulting in more than a million people having already fled the country, Borrell explained. The EU is committed to protecting all refugees and providing humanitarian assistance.

Referring to the bombing by Russian forces of Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant, Borrell said it was “unacceptable” for the devastating consequences it could have on the whole of Europe. “Russia must respect the security of the nuclear power zone for the security of the entire European continent,” he said.

The EU Council of Foreign Ministers, with the participation of their counterparts from the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom, also discussed the possibility of strengthening sanctions against Russia. “What matters is the implementation of the sanctions that have already been agreed,” Borrell said. However, he said that new sanctions are being considered, including the possibility of excluding other Russian banks from the Swift financial system. He also said that an exchange of views took place on measures related to the energy sector and the closure of EU ports to Russian vessels. “These sanctions were imposed by some countries, but there was no decision,” he said.

He also said that dependence on Russian gas, which accounts for 40% of EU consumption, should be reduced. “The green transition must be accelerated for geopolitical reasons,” Borrell said.
