The sale of the “Pegasus Express”, which was traveling in the colors of Hellenic Seaways, for scrap, seems to be going on by the largest Greek coastal group, Attica Group.
Shipping sources say in Capital.gr that the steamer will be transported by trailer to a dump in Turkey due to the mechanical problems it is facing. The ship was built in 1977 in Italy and bears the Greek flag.
It is recalled that in August 2020 the ship collided with a shallow area near the prefecture of Armathia in Kasos and while operating a route from the port of Sitia to the ports of the prefecture of Kassos – prefecture of Karpathos – prefecture of Halki – prefecture of Rhodes. Thus, from the beginning of September last year until today, it is anchored in the Shipbuilding and Repair Zone of Perama.
Ship brokers point out that the price was below $ 300 per ldt. It is noted that in order to calculate the sale price of a ship for dismantling, the unit of measurement is defined as ldt (light displacement tonnage), the “net” weight, ie of the ship, empty cargo. The price for the Greek ship is in line with the prices offered today by Turkish scrap yards in the market.
Several Turkish yards are certified for safety and environmental issues by the European Union and in the case of “Express Pegasus” all the standards are met.
Fleet renewal
In April 2022, the three state-of-the-art Attica Group aero catamaran ships are expected to be ready, the construction agreement of which was announced at the beginning of the year.
The total cost of the investment amounted to 21 million euros and the steamers will be launched on the lines of the Saronic Gulf, replacing older technology ships of the group. The ships will have a maximum speed of 34 knots, a total length of 36 meters, a width of 9.7 meters and a carrying capacity of 150 passengers.
His information Capital.gr report that the group is not launching new ship orders at the moment, but recognizes that it will need a radical renewal of the entire shipping fleet in the next ten years. In this light, when the conditions are ripe, it will move accordingly.
Attica Group is active in passenger shipping through Superfast Ferries, Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and Africa Morocco Link, with a total of 32 ships.
