An independent state of Palestine remains a firm goal of German foreign policy as part of a two-state solution in the region, a foreign ministry spokesman said. According to State Department spokeswoman Catherine Desauer, the “two-state solution will allow both Palestinians and Israelis to live side by side in peace.” Mrs. Desauer also added that the German government considers a political process aimed at a two-state solution to be of urgent importance, clarifying that there is no alternative to the peaceful coexistence of Palestinians and Israelis. He also declined to comment on other countries' decisions, while stressing the importance of European Union cohesion on such issues.
