A new No. 3 on the list of the world’s richest people is here – even if it is not as well known as the rest of his “roommates” in the upper echelons of global wealth: Indian billionaire Gautam Adani outbid French luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault on Tuesday.
With a fortune of $137 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index, Adani is the first Asian in history to enter the “golden trio”. In front of him on the list of “Crossroads” are only Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (with $153 billion) and Tesla CEO Elon Musk (with $251 billion).
The news comes just six months after Adani officially became the richest man in all of Asia. He has added $60.9 billion to his fortune this year alone, being the only one among the top 10 not to have seen his wealth decline over the year.
Adani has made huge strides in individual success since dropping out of Gujarat University in his second year to become a diamond appraiser. He is the founder of the Adani Group, which has a huge portfolio of companies across a range of industries, including ports, coal and energy.
Adani first became a billionaire in 2008, 20 years after he founded his commodity export company. The 60-year-old surpassed Bill Gates on the list of wealth tycoons in July when the latter announced he was donating $20 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Whether the Indian tycoon will be able to stay at No. 3 remains to be seen, with analysts raising concerns about his group’s debt levels during his expansion. An upward push in the share prices of companies such as Arnaud’s LVMH or Gates’ Microsoft could dislodge Adani from the trio.
The 10 richest people in the world as of August 30, 2022, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, were:
1. Elon Musk — $251 billion
2. Jeff Bezos — $153 billion
3. Gautam Adani — $137 billion
4. Bernard Arnault — $136 billion
5. Bill Gates — $117 billion
6. Warren Buffett — $100 billion
7. Larry Page — $93.3 billion
8. Sergey Brin — $95.8 billion
9. Steve Ballmer — $93.7 billion
10. Larry Ellison — $93.3 billion
