Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates the airport, said the threatening letter was received on Thursday, November 23. The terrorist threatens to blow up Terminal 2 if he does not receive the specified amount of Bitcoin within 48 hours. The attackers promised to send a final warning in 24 hours if the funds were not transferred to the specified address.
After receiving the email, MIAL’s Head of Quality and Customer Service at Mumbai Airport immediately contacted the police, filing a complaint against the unknown sender of the message. An investigation into this case is already underway. The police have registered a case under Section 385 of the Indian Penal Code for threatening to cause hurt with intent to commit extortion and Section 505(1)(b) for disturbing public peace.
This is not the first time that attackers have threatened bombs to extort bitcoins. A few years ago, an Indian teenager threatened to blow up the Miami airport because American police refused to track down a scammer who stole about $1,000 worth of bitcoins from the teenager.
Similar cases occurred in Russia. Former clients of the non-functioning WEX crypto exchange demanded the return of the missing 120 bitcoins, frightening them with false reports about mining of court buildings in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
