An “unusually large meteorite” briefly illuminated the sky to the south Norway today, causing a spectacular spectacle of sound and light as it crossed the sky and a small portion of it may have landed on Earth, possibly within walking distance of the capital Oslo, according to experts.
There are currently no reports of injuries or damage.
Reports from residents that they saw the phenomenon began to reach 1 a.m. local time, with a video circulating on social media showing at least one flash over a marina in Holmstrand, south of Oslo.
The Norwegian Meteorite Network is currently analyzing the video and other data to find out the origin and direction of the meteorite.
According to preliminary data, a meteorite may have landed on Earth, in a large wooded area called Finemarka, 60 km west of the capital Oslo, according to the Norwegian network.
“It was crazy,” Morten Bilett, a member of the network, told Reuters that he had seen and heard the meteorite, according to the Athens News Agency.
The meteorite was traveling at a speed of 15-20 kilometers per second and illuminated the night sky for about 5-6 seconds, Bilet described.
“What we had last night was a big one meteorite to possibly travel between Mars and Jupiter, which is a belt of our asteroids. “And when he moves at high speed, it causes a roar, a light and a lot of excitement between us (the experts) and maybe fear among others,” said Bilett.
There were no reports of injuries or severe damage, especially in 2013, when a meteorite flew over Russia and exploded over Chelyabinsk, according to Bilet.
