ANA declares water shortage and critical situation in the Xingu River

The National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA) declared a water shortage until November 30 in the Xingu River, where the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant is located, and in its federal tributary, the Iriri River. The decision was taken by the agency’s board of directors at a meeting held this Monday, 30.

In a statement, ANA reported that hydrometeorological scenarios for this year indicate the possibility of even more critical levels being reached in October and November. The regulatory body also highlighted that the decision was approved “with the aim of increasing water security in the region and mitigating the impacts of low river levels on water use”.

This is the fourth time that the agency has issued a declaration of water scarcity this year. Amid the lack of rain, similar measures have already been adopted for the Paraguay rivers, Madeira river, Purus and their tributaries, Acre river and Laco river, and in the lower reaches of the Tapajós river.

Declarations of water scarcity were used for the first time in 2021, in the midst of the water crisis, in the Paraná Hydrographic Region.
