“I had anal cancer. By the time I managed to figure out what I had, it was already advanced, and I had a slim chance of survival. It's very scary. It came from HPV,” he declared.

The presenter, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, also said that she had never heard about the virus before she had the disease.

Ana also advocated that parents and guardians take their children aged 9 to 14 for HPV vaccination at health centers, at least Unified Health System (SUS) . Vaccination has been available in Brazil for ten years.

“I would have taken the vaccine. If I had known there was a vaccine, I would have avoided all of this,” she said.

As it is a sexually transmitted virus, HPV can carry a certain stigma, which Ana Maria Braga commented saying that no one needs to be ashamed of the disease.

“You don't have to feel guilty because you have cancer. It's not your fault because you are a sexually active woman. If you are a mother, there is no way you can be a mother and not be sexually active,” she said.

“Sexuality has to be seen the way it is, it’s a natural thing, made from nature, otherwise we wouldn’t be here”, concluded the presenter.
