Anac authorizes expansion of night flights at Canoas Air Base (RS)

The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) approved, this Wednesday (10), new schedules for landings and takeoffs at Canoas Air Base, increasing from 49 to 87 weekly commercial flights. The base is being used temporarily, while Salgado Filho Airport, in Porto Alegre (RS) is closed for operations.

With Anac’s approval, Canoas Air Base will be able to have up to 13 landings and 13 takeoffs per day, increasing the number of passengers to 35,000 per week. The new schedules are concentrated between 9 pm and 7:30 am (night operations). In practice, the expansion will come into effect between 10 and 15 days.

For the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, the expansion of flights eases the challenges for commercial air access to the capital. However, he says that he is “committed to resuming operations at Porto Alegre airport.”

The airport’s runway and facilities were flooded for weeks due to the rains that hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul from May onwards.

On Monday (8), Fraport, the concessionaire that manages Salgado Filho Airport, announced the resumption of passenger boarding and disembarking operations starting July 15 at the airport facilities in the capital. However, landings and takeoffs will continue to take place at Canoas Air Base.
